our planet needs us!
By the year 2030, some 53 million tons of plastic will exist in our oceans, rivers, and lakes. That’s with the current global efforts in play to reduce plastic waste.
Globally to date, there are about 8.3 billion tons of plastic in the world – some 6.3 billion tons of that is trash. Imagine 55 million jumbo jets and that’s how much plastic exists here. In 1950, we created 2 million tons a year, which increased 200-fold as of 2015.
The average person eats about a credit card worth of plastic every week. Research has found 1 in 3 fish contain micro-plastic waste from single-use plastics like straws. These plastics are known to cause cancer, birth defects, & reproductive issues.
meet Happy Straw, truly biodegradable straws
How do we help solve the problem? You can use Happy Straws as you normally would with any traditional plastic straw, but without worrying about the disposal method as it is truly biodegradable. The key to Happy Straw is PHA (short for polyhydroxyalkanoate). It’s a substrate derived from the fermentation of canola oil that maintains the feel and user experience of traditional plastic, but that’s where the similarities end. You can throw it away after you are done, knowing the used straw will disappear in about 90 days!
Unlike petroleum-based plastics that take 200+ years to go away, PHA products are created from nature and designed to return to nature. So, while nearly every piece of traditional plastic ever made still sits somewhere spoiling our planet, we offer a bio-based replacement with an honest, end-of-life solution that effectively combats the global plastics crisis.
the science behind Happy Straw
Because of its organic make-up, PHA acts as an energy and food source wherever there is a significant presence of bacteria to devour it. This makes products like Happy Straw soil and marine biodegradable, home and industrial compostable, and have a lower greenhouse gas profile than traditional plastics. That’s a trifecta of eco-friendliness.
If we haven’t made it clear, PHA is a groundbreaking advancement in bio-based alternatives to traditional plastics. We owe it to our planet, and ourselves, to push for smarter alternatives that can go away after use... sustainably returning to the earth.
