10 Ways You Can Bug Proof Your Home

10 Ways to Bug Proof Your Home

Sure, it’s almost impossible to completely bug-proof your home, but there are things you can do to make your home less hospitable insects. While you might find an occasional bug now and then, the goal of bug proofing your home is to keep out as many bugs as possible. Check out these 10 easy ways to help keep insects outside and out of your home!

1. Install and Maintain Screens

Bugs often enter your home through small cracks in the windows. Using a fine mesh screen will help prevent bugs from entering your home. If you don’t have window screens, you should install them. If you already have window screens installed, check to make sure that the mesh is free of any holes. Repair or replace any damaged screens.

2. Seal Around Doors

Bugs can easily crawl in through small cracks around door frames. If light is getting through, there is enough room for a bug to get in as well. Seal around the door by using weather stripping, which can be purchased at a hardware store. This easy to install solution can seal up the cracks and close off a potential access point for bugs.

3. Seal Cracks in Foundation

Just like cracks around the door, any crack in the exterior walls for your home is an easy access point for bugs. Caulk any cracks you find. Be sure to check around gaps around dryer vents, gas lines, cable wires or phone lines. Seal interior cracks with spray foam or caulk depending on the size of the crack.

4. Take Out Garbage Often

The smell of trash is one that bugs can’t resist. If you can smell the trash, even just a little bit, then bugs can smell it too. In fact, even if you can’t smell the trash, chances are bugs can still smell it. Line your garbage cans with plastic garbage bags. Make sure they are sealed tightly when you take them outside. Don’t forget about the recycling bin! Make sure you wash out the recycling bin often, as residue from food containers can build up at the bottom of the bin.

5. Install Critter-Proof Mesh

Attic and crawl spaces are a favorite home to animals such as raccoons, mice and birds. These animals are cause for concern, but they also carry bugs such as mites, fleas and other pests that can infest your home. Install a critter-proof mesh behind any vents to the attic or crawl spaces.

6. Eliminate Moisture by Fixing Leaks

Excess moisture from leaks create a perfect humid environment for bugs. They are attracted to the humidity and in fact most insects require a certain amount of humidity to survive. Make sure to fix any leak, no matter how small as soon as possible. Also make sure that areas such as basements and crawl spaces stay dry during periods of heavy rain. If you have moisture in your basement, chances are you have bugs too. Install effective drainage systems and run dehumidifiers as needed.

10. Keep Your Yard Tidy

Mulch, leaves and garden debris all harbor insects. Keep mulch away from the foundation of your home and clean up any organic matter that has accumulated. Mow your lawn regularly and keep it short near your house. Remove plants at the end of the growing season and trim back perennials. Keep trees and shrubs from coming in contact with your home, they function as a highway for insects to move along. Trim tree branches so they don’t come in contact with the roof. Keep shrubs away from windows and doors.

With these simple changes and fixes you can help ensure that your home is more difficult for insects to enter. And you can sleep better knowing that you are safe from bugs, insects and pests.
